Tyler, Pocahontas, Preservationist - Fun Fact Clues for This Day

I was floating through all the new Fun Facts that I have discovered. And I had to post this one! I got excited and had to do more digging.  I thought this was very interesting.

So, have your heard of Harrison Ruffin Tyler?  He was born November 9, 1928. He is a chemical engineer, businessman, and preservationist. Noteworthy, but wait – there’s more.

Harrison went to college and graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1949 but there was a shortage of jobs in chemistry, so he continued his education where he received a second bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Harrison went on to cofound ChemTreat, a water treatment company.

But here’s the really interesting part. Harrison is a son of Lyon Gardiner Tyler and the last LIVING (as of this posting) grandchild of former U.S. President John Tyler, who was our 10th president in case you were wondering.

Harrison was born to Susan Ruffin and Lyon Gardiner Tyler. Lyon, by the way, was 75 when Harrison was born! His paternal grandparents were Julia Gardiner and our tenth US President, John Tyler. Through his mother, he is a great-grandson of Edmund Ruffin and a descendant of Benjamin Harrison IV, Robert Carter I and Pocahontas! Such noteworthy relatives!

Lastly, Harrison purchased Fort Pocahontas in 1996 and advocated for its preservation. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Currently, Harrison has had some medical issues and as of 2021 he lives in a Virginia nursing home. We wish you well Harrison.
